The marketing team of our DMC Green Route Africa were invited to experience the Anantara Bazaruto Resort, Mozambique.

Access is via Vilankulos, a small seaside town north of the capital, Maputo. Airlink offers scheduled flights from Johannesburg (5 days a week) and 2 flights a week direct from Nelspruit Airport, allowing a great beach/safari combo. The regularity of these connections will increase towards the end of the year. Upon arrival you are transferred by minivan to the water’s edge, where you board a modern speedboat for the 1hr transfer to the island. Wifi is available and mineral water is served on board. The island also has an airstrip for charter arrivals (reducing the transfer time to 15 minutes).

The Anantara Bazaruto is the only resort on the island, so it really is a completely private getaway, suitable for FIT’s, leisure groups and incentive programs. There are two main room categories: The one-bedroom beach villas are perfectly located just a few steps away from the white sandy beach and come complete with sun beds and hammocks. The deluxe sea-view pool villas and suite villas are located on a hill, a short stroll from the beach. They are more exclusive, each with a private plunge pool, large entertainment deck and two bedrooms.

The theme here is fun-in-the-sun with a multitude of activities to keep everyone busy, from children to the most dedicated sports lover. The imposing sand dunes on the island are ideal for sand boarding and the warm tropical waters make for great snorkeling and diving (the resort has their own PADI centre). Other activities include sunset dhow cruises, horse riding, a tennis court, a fun putting golf course, cooking lessons and a basketball course. Guests can also opt to just relax and soak up the sun next to one of two pools or visit the spa with its magnificent ocean views.

New – Hike the Ngorongoro Crater Rim

Launching this year, the privately guided Ngorongoro Crater Rim hike is hosted by a Gibb’s Farm naturalist and rangers from the Ngorongoro Conservation area in Tanzania. On the six- to seven-hour wilderness walk in untouched forests, guests can see unique plant life, animals and rare birds. Starting at Gibb’s Farm, the hike leads into the lush Ngorongoro Forest and ascends to the crater rim with views of the crater floor below. Most walkers will encounter elephant, Cape buffalo, bush pig, and a number of other animals along the way. With over 200 species on the Gibb’s Farm bird list, you are sure to see an abundance of bird life. Please note that the altitude and du- ration of the trek requires you to be in good physical condition.

Magnificent Ivory Lodge opens

The luxury Lion Sands Ivory Lodge has reopened after a complete rebuild. It is located in the Lion Sands Private Game Reserve in the Sabi Sand, adjacent to the Kruger National Park. Access is via Skukuza or Nelspruit airports. The new lodge features eight rooms and the Fish Eagle Villa. This superb villa includes butler service, its own private gym and spa, and 2 bedrooms, sleeping a maximum 4 adults and 2 children. The designers have taken their cue from Mother Nature to create a lodge built ‘of the earth’, using natural materials to enhance the surrounding bush environment. The timeless de- sign incorporates steel, wood, thatch, glass, water & sand. Bold furniture and edgy décor, ambient lighting, inferences of tribal design and highly textured finishes – all combine to make Lion Sands Ivory Lodge an utterly sensory experience.
