The Sacred Land of Amerindians, the foot print of Dutch Colonies.

In Suriname you will discover an unknown side of South America.

This former English colony, conquered by the Dutch in 1667, was administered by the West India Company. A century of revolts and marronnage about the recognition of the autonomy of slaves in the forest with the Bushinengues (men of the forest). The Black Maroon community was born and remains alive nowadays. Many picturesque and authentic villages line the rivers that are in harmony with the Amerindians.

It was not until 1975 that Suriname gained independence to become the Republic of Suriname.

Here the Dutch imprint is striking and Paramaribo, the capital, is an example of cultural integration.

17th century Dutch architecture streets are animated by a multi-ethnic population where Javanese rub shoulders with Bushinengues, Blacks, Amerindians, Hindustani and Dutch.

You will observe the pink dolphins, make a private cruise at sunset between river and ocean, you can introduce you to the sport fishing or learn the survival in the forest with the Amerindians, visit the old coffee plantation, organize galas dinners in places out of the time, sleep in eco lodges in the middle of the forest.

You will also be able to discover the magnificent spectacle of gigantic rocks of Kwamalasamutu, the land of the Amerindians Tiriyó which extends on more than 3 hectares decorated with at least 350 sacred sculptures.

This region kept its secret until 2004 when the Werehpai Caverns were discovered, whose walls have been home for more than 4000 years of petroglyphs depicting abstract forms evoking the universe of early ages.

Zanzibar’s allure is legendary. One of East Africa’s great trading centres, the archipelago has been for centuries a crossroads of culture, a melting pot of influences where Africa, India and Arabia meet. A complete change of pace from the mainland, a place where life’s rhythms are set by the monsoon winds and the cycles of the moon.

While Zanzibar Island is most visited, the archipelago is also made up of Pemba to the north, plus numerous smaller islands and islets. Each of the islands has its own distinct character. Zanzibar’s major attraction is Stone Town, with its whitewashed, coral-rag houses, quaint shops, bazaars, mosques, courtyards and squares. Its other draw card is of course its coast line, edged by fine, white-sand beaches and spectacular diving and snorkelling.

Kenya offers abundant travel options from mountains and deserts, colourful tribal culture, beaches and coral reefs, and some of Africa’s best wildlife attractions. Kenya is often referred to as Africa in microcosm. Stunning landscapes set the scene, from Kakamega’s rainforests to Indian Ocean beaches by way of Mt Kenya National Park; the rolling grasslands of the Masai Mara to searing deserts on the shores of the Jade Sea; with The Rift Valley, home to Hell’s Gate National Park, cleaving a massive gash through it all.

Wildlife safaris have been the mainstay of Kenya’s tourism for decades, and several Kenyan parks, like the Masai Mara, are among the best places in Africa to see lions, elephants, leopards and the famous wildebeest migration. Kenya rates as one of the top five bird-watching destinations in the world; other activities for outdoor enthusiasts include trekking the glacial ridges of Mt Kenya, ballooning over the Masai Mara, snorkelling at the Marine National Park in Malindi on the Indian Ocean coast, and much more besides. Kenya’s biggest city, Nairobi, has an interesting urban appeal with its crazy traffic, cafes, museums and nightlife.

Zambia – a country with vast lakes, rich wetlands and breathtaking African sunsets.

If you are out to experience the ‘real’ Africa, Zambia is that diamond in the rough. The country boasts some of the continent’s best wildlife parks, and offers some of the region’s major highlights such as Victoria Falls in the south west and the Lower Zambezi National Park. It’s an angler’s dream, as fishermen travel from all over the world to try their luck on the mighty Zambezi River, with the hopes of landing a toothy Tigerfish or the rare, giant Vundu. Avid birders also flock to Zambia to glimpse its fabulous diversity of birds, most notably Chaplin’s Barbets.

The wild Zambezi River is perfect for adrenaline rush activities such as river rafting, canoeing safaris and river surfing.

Big game safaris, abundant birdlife and raw, pulsating wilderness are what visitors can expect to find. The Zambian government has long recognised the economic importance of its wildernesses and is acutely aware of environmental concerns: almost one-third of the country is given over to national parks and game reserves.

Highlights

Livingstone, named after the Scottish missionary and explorer David Livingstone, is the tourism capital of Zambia. It is located just 10km from the world-famous, spectacular Victoria Falls and is the starting point for a number of adrenalin-inducing adventures and sightseeing activities.

Between 1911 and 1935, Livingstone was the capital of Northern Rhodesia, as Zambia was previously known. The town is quaint with a understated colonial feel. The main street is lined with classic Victorian buildings – the wooden verandas and tin roofed houses serving as classic examples of early English settler architecture. Livingstone is relatively compact, so easy to navigate on foot.

Livingstone has earned its title as the Adventure Capital of Africa – the one-day low water river rafting is considered to be the best one-day white water experience available in the world. Apart from the multitude of adrenalin-inducing sports available there are many other activities in and around the town which will make a trip to this destination more than memorable. When David Livingstone first glimpsed the majestic Victoria Falls in 1855, he claimed “Scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight” and named them after Queen Victoria. The force of the falling water produces high clouds of spray, which gave the falls their African name: Mosi-oa-Tunya – “the Smoke that Thunders”.

Botswana is one of the world’s most exciting travel destinations for exploring African wildlife in its natural state. The beauty of Botswana is found in its land formations, its wilderness and its cultural diversity.

Visitors are spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting a safari. From the ancient baobabs of the Makgadikgadi & Nxai Pans, the vast open land of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, the sand dunes of the Kgalagadi, to the savannah grasslands of Chobe National Park and the waterways of the Okavango Delta, the diversity is staggering.

Chobe National Park

Spanning some 11700 square kilometers, the Chobe National Park boasts one of the richest concentrations of game in Africa. Comprising four distinct eco-systems, Chobe plays host to a timeless story of African wildlife wonder, where visitors can encounter everything from the Big Five to a spectacular range of antelope, birdlife, reptiles and even rare and endangered species such as wild dog and Roan and Sable antelope.

From the mighty meandering of the Chobe River in the north to the savannah grasslands in the south, interspersed with woodland and lagoons, the Chobe National Park is Botswana’s largest and most visited authentic African safari destination.

The Okavango Delta

Emerging from a unique set of geological conditions, the Okavango is truly one of the world’s most fascinating natural phenomena.

This inland delta drains some 11 cubic kilometers of water across and area of some 15000 square kilometers into the Kalahari Basin each year, forming a labyrinth of wetland islands and game rich habitat that plays host to some of Africa’s most enthralling wildlife encounters. Everything from viewing the Big Five by makoro (dugout canoe) to huge herds of antelope and rare species on foot, a safari experience in the Okavango Delta will surpass all expectations.

Savute

One of Africa’s rare and iconic destinations, Savute is a relic of an ancient inland lake which is fed by the Savute Channel and due to intermittent tectonic movement, dries up and flows seemingly without warning.

This curious movement in water levels has resulted in a landscape littered with interesting finds. Savannahs and grasslands, scrub and majestic thorn trees play host to a wide variety of antelope and Big Five, as well as birdlife and even an annual migration of zebra and predators.

James Aitken, Founder and Managing Director of Cashel Travel said: “We view at least the short to mid term as a time of unrivalled opportunity for London. With Cashel’s recent appointment as the euromic and travelmediate member for the UK, we have the opportunity to attract even more business and leisure tourism visitors to London as a direct result of our proven creativity and knowledge and our wealth of experience; this is an opportunity we intend to take”.

A recent Tourism Vision for London survey supported by the Mayor of London projects:

  • Visitor spending to grow by almost 50 per cent to £22 billion a year, up from £14.9 billion (2016);
  • Some of the fastest growing markets for visitors to London by 2025 are China (103 per cent growth), India (90 per cent growth), the USA (43 per cent) and the UAE (43 per cent).

Gerry Manser, who has more than 30 years experience in the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Events) tourism sector is consulting on the London specialist team at Cashel Travel, who will provide major event support services for companies, organisations and associations across all sectors.

Upon arrival you are transferred by minivan to the water’s edge, where you board a modern speedboat for the 1hr transfer to the island. Wifi is available and mineral water is served on board. The island also has an airstrip for charter arrivals (reducing the transfer time to 15 minutes).

The Anantara Bazaruto is the only resort on the island, so it really is a completely private getaway, suitable for FIT’s, leisure groups and incentive programs. There are two main room categories: The one-bedroom beach villas are perfectly located just a few steps away from the white sandy beach and come complete with sun beds and hammocks. The deluxe sea-view pool villas and suite villas are located on a hill, a short stroll from the beach. They are more exclusive, each with a private plunge pool, large entertainment deck and two bedrooms.

The theme here is fun-in-the-sun with a multitude of activities to keep everyone busy, from children to the most dedicated sports lover. The imposing sand dunes on the island are ideal for sand boarding and the warm tropical waters make for great snorkeling and diving (the resort has their own PADI centre). Other activities include sunset dhow cruises, horse riding, a tennis court, a fun putting golf course, cooking lessons and a basketball course. Guests can also opt to just relax and soak up the sun next to one of two pools or visit the spa with its magnificent ocean views.

Magnificent Ivory Lodge opens

fisheaglevillapoolfiredeck-060338-2

The luxury Lion Sands Ivory Lodge has reopened after a complete rebuild. It is located in the Lion Sands Private Game Reserve in the Sabi Sand, adjacent to the Kruger National Park. Access is via Skukuza or Nelspruit airports. The new lodge features eight rooms and the Fish Eagle Villa. This superb villa includes butler service, its own private gym and spa, and 2 bedrooms, sleeping a maximum 4 adults and 2 children. The designers have taken their cue from Mother Nature to create a lodge built ‘of the earth’, using natural materials to enhance the surrounding bush environment. The timeless de- sign incorporates steel, wood, thatch, glass, water & sand. Bold furniture and edgy décor, ambient lighting, inferences of tribal design and highly textured finishes – all combine to make Lion Sands Ivory Lodge an utterly sensory experience.

panama-city_quetzal-motivo

Costa Rica
Air France recently launched a direct flight from Paris to San José, Costa Rica, in November 2016 (2 flights per week). This brand new connection is a good example of the non-stop flights from Europe to Central America that are on the rise. It will be additional to the other direct flights to Panama City launched by Air France, KLM and Lufthansa.

tortuguero-with-map

Guatemala
The famous Casa Santo Domingo is a boutique hotel located in the 16th century remains of the Santo Domingo de Guzman convent. Good to know: this magnificent place in Guatemala offers a new meeting and event venue on top of a hill where guests can overlook the colonial city of Antigua. Spectacular views of the valley and its volcanos guaranteed.

lake-atitlan-with-map

Belize
Until now it was a challenge to organize an incentive program in the “hidden tropical and Caribbean treasure of Central America”. The flights were not easy to find (unless they were combined with Guatemala) and that was the main reason for that. A new direct flight launched by Copa Airlines – going from Panama City to Belize City – will solve this problem and creates new opportunities for MICE and business trips to Belize.

Nicaragua
National Geographic has just completed shooting a documentary about the volcano Masaya and its impressive “lava lake”. The adventurer and film maker Sam Cossman and his team spent 34 days on the volcano in Nicaragua. A few feet from the magma in fusion they shot the most amazing images of the Masaya. The movie premiere is planned for early 2017. A good way to start an inspiring 2017.

Honduras
“Las Verandas” is a remarkable project that is going forward on the Caribbean island of Roatan, in the archipelago of the Bay Islands. This project exists of villas and 18 charming bedrooms that are available for groups. A real fairytale accommodation alongside the turquoise waters and the coral reef of Honduras. Sri Lanka or Ceylon is an enchanting tropical island in the Indian Ocean with golden, sandy beaches, exotic wildlife, rolling hills, tea plantations, colonial towns and friendly people. The traditional greeting, Ayu Bowan – “wishing you a long life” – is testament to this. But did you know that Sri Lanka also is a perfect MICE destination? We will give you 8 reasons why:

32687637-h1-motifs

1. Heritage and history
Some of Asia’s oldest legends are set here and the island has a long history of contact with foreign merchants and powers. Buddhist, Tamil, Roman, Arab, Portuguese, Dutch and British influences can all be found in Sri Lanka’s culture. In addition the Ancient Cities are a fascinating region, full of archaeology, history and natural beauty. Do not miss out on the largest festival of the country Kandy Perahera, that takes place around the Buddhist Temple of the Tooth.

2. Small size: all in one
One of the best things about Sri Lanka as a MICE destination is its small size. Why not spending the morning in the hills watching the tea pickers, go to an ancient Buddhist temple in the afternoon and enjoy your evening eating seafood at the beach? Although Sri Lanka is not that big, landscape varies enormously; from dense jungles to empty golden beaches; from monasteries and temples to cool, misty mountains dotted with the bright saris of pickers.

3. Colombo
Colombo is the economic and political capital of Sri Lanka. A big and vibrant city. Do not forget to visit the Fort, Cinnamon Gardens and Pettah (an old and historically interesting district).

4. Beach life
Sri Lanka is famous for its idyllic beaches. They stretch from the eastern coast all the way around to the west near Colombo. You will find there accommodations that vary from intimate boutiques to luxurious resorts on private beaches and larger hotels in more vivid places.

5. Elephants
You cannot imagine Sri Lanka without her elephants. The Millenium Elephant Foundation and Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage (close to Kandy) give you the opportunity to visit young, elderly and sick elephants but also to wash them yourselves. Not to be missed.

6. National Parks and wildlife
The best places to enjoy the abundant wildlife of Sri Lanka are Uda Walawe, Yala, and Minneriya National Park. Enjoy an exciting jeep safari and take a close look to wild elephants and crocodiles. If you are lucky you can even spot the illusive leopard here.

7. Tea Plantations
Sri Lanka rises up from the coast to the hills. The landscape is marked with tea bushes, and interlaced with streams and waterfalls. The lush character and cool climate seem to be a perfect combination for tea. Did you know that Sri Lanka has long been a pilgrimage destination for tea planters and tea lovers looking for their perfect cup of tea?

8. Air connectivity, hotels and venues
Sri Lanka’s capital Colombo is well connected. It has direct flights from major European, Indian cities and a convenient destination for onward flights to Maldives. With-in Sri Lanka, there are many domestic flights that covers all major destinations. The train connectivity though limited, can be a good option in certain areas. Sri Lanka has a varied range of accommodation options to offer right from Budget 3* to Deluxe 5*. In past few years numerous new hotels opened their doors in Sri Lanka: from tea planters’ bungalows and private beach villas to small boutique hotels. Many historical buildings including gentlemen’s clubs and private homes take in guests. In addition you will find a number of distinctive, elegant hotels and beach villas designed by the country’s most famous architect Geoffrey Bawa.

It’s a wrap: the first edition of our new MICE event The Roadshow was a success! In five days we traveled from Amsterdam to Brussels, Dusseldorf, Munich and Warsaw and met with interesting MICE specialists from all over Europe. Exhibitors showed their destinations and products, guests enjoyed inspiring speakers perform, watched special photography and art exhibitions and created a ‘live art piece’ together inspired by this year’s theme: ‘Art & the City’. In total we welcomed around 190 guests. Curious? Please find a short impression below:

Famous City Amsterdam
The kick-off of The Roadshow  took place in Amsterdam. During this first event in Amsterdam special speakers rocked the stage: Robin Cox of Citinerary and Valerie Reinhold of Redprint: dna shared their vision on how to promote a city / destination, seen through the eyes of the locals or from a personal point of view. Impressive images from the book Famous City Amsterdam (of well known photographer Marte Visser) were exposed throughout the venue and created a inspiring environment for the MICE meetings. Special live entertainment by singer and performer Siobhan de Jong.

Blooming Brussels
Hotel Bloom was the decor of the Brussels version of The Roadshow, a wonderful designed hotel in the city center. People listened to speaker Robin Cox, joined interesting meetings and enjoyed good food and drinks together. Just like in the other four cities, the guests in Brussels created a big art piece together and let their creative minds free.

Doing business in Dusseldorf
The meetings in Dusseldorf formed a vibrant get-together of interesting people who joined The Roadshow to get inspired and above all: to do some business. The meetings went on and on and our guests were enjoying every minute of it. The pictures below show the atmosphere in a nice and arty way, according to the theme Art & the City.

MICE experience Munich
Just like the other cities we had a blast in Munich. The venue was perfect for our one-to-one speed date sessions and created a relaxing setting for a busy business afternoon. Catching up with ‘old’ contacts and meeting with new ones leaded to a magnificent piece of art, designed by all our guests.

Iguazu Falls - Boat Ride

From August 5th to 21st Rio was the decor for the Olympic Games 2016. An international happening that has put Brazil on the worldwide map again. But besides sports, the country has a lot to offer when it comes to impressive nature and unique travel experiences. Especially outside Rio the landscapes and flora & fauna are breathtaking. Foz do Iguaçu
Foz do Iguaçu, also known as ‘Foz’, is located in the south western federal state of Paraná. Fortaleza
Fortaleza is one of the hotspots many tourists like to discover and there are several reasons why. Take for example the year round tropical climate, the paradisiac beaches and endless shades of the blue sea and white sand. These conditions make Fortaleza the perfect location for water sports. Did you know that the world competitions for kitesurfing, windsurfing and surfing are commonly being held here? But there is more:

  • Fortaleza is a surprising experience for food lovers, you will enjoy the succulent dishes of the northeastern gastronomy here.
  • Besides the beach and stunning natural scenery, the city’s skyscrapers, futuristic architecture and world class hotels make. Fortaleza a perfect destination for both leisure and MICE trips.
  • Make sure you visit Ceará, it has one of the most stunning coasts you will ever see, with almost 600km of beautiful and unique beaches.

Roaring engines, cheering audiences and international racing heroes. A Formula 1 race is one of the most exciting events to include in a MICE itinerary or business trip. Especially during a visit of one of the most impressive racing circuits of the world, a Formula 1 experience is an experience of a lifetime. And that is exactly what event organizers and MICE pros aim for: making impressions that will last forever. So why not consider the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2016?

yas-areial-view-1280x720

A whooshing experience

Extraordinary dinner company
At the end of June 2016 a new activity will be introduced in Victoria Falls in Livingstone, Zambia: dining with elephants. This will be a half day surprising excursion that includes a 20 minute jet boat transfer to a secluded island, interaction with a large family of magnificent, habituated elephants and a delicious meal. The maximum number of people who can join this activity as a group is 50 people.

Eco-friendly venue
At Sekuti Island guests can enjoy tea and coffee and a talk by a well-known modern-day explorer. After they will take a short pontoon ride to The Elephant Café, a new restaurant built on a deck in the Zambezi River. This unique place is set among a resident herd of orphaned and rescued elephants. This small, gorgeous and eco-friendly venue will feature wild edibles and local, seasonal ingredients by chef Annabel.

Dining with elephants - Zambia - Green Route
Danny and the herd
While enjoying a drink at the bank of the café, suddenly the elephants will appear on cue, definitely a highlight of the day. The herd exists of ten elephants ranging from Danny, the huge male with magnificent tusks, to new babies that were born in captivity. Dining with the elephants is an astonishing experience: imagine elephants emerging from the bush and within minutes ending up right in front of you. It is important to note that the elephants are coached purely on reward basis, by using food and compliments.

Dining with elephants - Zambia - Green Route
From sunrise to dinner
The dining with elephants experience will be offered as a sunrise, lunch, afternoon high-tea and dinner option.

Rome is one of the most popular destinations for a city trip and Italy a beloved leisure and business trip destination for many years. Yes, we all think we know Rome: the city of the Vatican, the Trevi fountain, Michelangelo and St. Peter’s Cathedral. And of course, Italy is about pasta, Tuscany, ice cream and cypress hills. But do you know where to find the best pizza in town? Or the best ‘hidden gems’ to stay? Let’s take you on a short tour through Italy and Rome and show you where to find these local treasures. Andiamo!

Vespa1

Best pizza in town
The word ‘pizza’ was first documented in 997 AD, in Gaeta Italy. The typical Italian flat bread focaccia turned into the pizza when the people of Naples decided to add tomato sauce as a topping: the pizza as we still know it today. The two most popular ones are the ‘Marinara’ and the ‘Margherita’ (named after Queen Margherita of Savoy who enjoyed this mozzarella-basil-tomato treat at Pizzeria di Pietro in 1889). One of the best places to eat a freshly baked pizza in Rome is definitely Sforno where you can eat the classic pizza. Make sure you will try a Napolitan pizza at Pizza Forum and a sophisticated one at Pizzerium (Via della Melodia 43).

Michelangelo and Rome
Michelangelo is one of the most famous artists of the Italian Renaissance; as a painter, a sculptor, architect and poet. Did you know that he was born in Tuscany (March 6th 1475) in a little village called Caprese, near Arezzo? In 1496 he moved to Rome where he created the ‘Bacchus’ and ‘Pietà’ statues. The famous ‘David’ followed when he turned back to Florence: ‘must see’s’ when traveling to Rome and Tuscany. The best places to see Michelangelo’s work in Rome are St. Peter’s Basilica (Pièta, frescos of Capella Sistina and the Last Judgement) and the tomb of Julius II in St. Peter’s Church in Vincoli. Visiting Florence? Make sure you go to the Gallery of the Academy of Florence, the Medici Chapel, Palazzo Vecchio and the Bargello Museum.

Hotels and coolest bars
Enjoying a city trip in Rome is like walking in one big open air museum. A nice hotel is the perfect add-on to keep this extraordinary experience alive 24 hours a day. Some of our favourites: Hotel de Russie, a pearl in the historic centre of Rome. Palazzo Montemartini, a mix of classic and contemporary style and one of the best terraces with a view over Rome.

There is a lot to see, to explore and to enjoy in Rome. From the museums and historical squares to the shopping streets and parks. The city if full of hidden gems when it comes to restaurants, gelaterias and… bars! Not always that easy to find though, but a great evening guaranteed. Enjoy a drink, a cosy dinner or the best gelato in town at one of the coolest places in Rome, like the Romans do: at Bar Sant’Eustachio – an institution and famous for their coffee – the Antico Caffè Greco – a classic – or The Stravinsky Bar in the Hotel de Russie – a very exclusive place.

Joining a local event is a great way of getting to know a destination. From a football game in the USA to the Oktober Fest in Germany. A traditional celebration can be a perfect add-on to any incentive trip or MICE get together. February is the time for masks, music and papier-mâché decorations: let’s celebrate Carnival di Viareggio in Italy.

Best Carnival of Europe

Carnevale di Viareggio is a carnival event yearly held in the Tuscan region that gathers thousands of people – tourists and Italians alike – to participate every year. It is considered amongst the most renowned carnival celebrations in both Italy and Europe. Another shade of the beloved Tuscan culture, it deserves a place of honor among Tuscany’s attractions.

Join the parade
It was conceived in 1873 as a masquerade event for the rich bourgeois in their discontent at having to pay a too-high tax price. Through the course of time, though, its principal characteristic has become its enormous, animated parade floats.

Gigantic Papier-mâché caricatures of the big political, cultural and showbiz names dominate among the extraordinary machines with movements, that become increasingly complex with each year, showing off the ideal marriage between grandiose scenic effects, new technologies and, of course, the mastery of Italian artistic talent.

Masks, music and more
The entire Carnival of Viareggio is accompanied by masked and musical all-nighters in the streets. These parties find their origins in the so-called ‘colored all-night dances’ (veglioni colorati) from the 1920’s – where the women donned dresses of certain hues and dyes, and the men had to appear in tuxedo. Even the decorations, confetti and tinsel stars had to follow a specific colour theme. Today, the most fashionable bars and locales participate in the celebration, helping to amp up the extraordinary factor of Carnival.
